Coordinates
Every point in the first quadrant is some steps right and some steps up from the origin, the corner where the axes meet.
Start
🔒
Coordinate Pairs
A point a steps right and b steps up from the origin has the coordinate pair (a, b): the first number counts right, the second counts up.
Premium
🔒
Axes
The x-axis runs right from the origin and the y-axis runs up from it; points on the x-axis have y-coordinate 0, points on the y-axis have x-coordinate 0, and the origin is on both.
Premium
🔒
x and y Coordinates
A point's x-coordinate counts its steps right of the y-axis and its y-coordinate counts its steps up from the x-axis; points with the same x-coordinate share a column, points with the same y-coordinate share a row, and a coordinate pair always gives the x-coordinate first.
Premium
🔒
Plotting Points
To plot a point from its coordinates, go right by the x-coordinate and up by the y-coordinate; a coordinate pair tells anyone exactly where a point is, and a rule about the coordinates can fit many points at once.
Premium
🔒
Identifying Points
To read a point's coordinates, look straight down (or up) to the x-axis for the x-coordinate and straight across to the y-axis for the y-coordinate; a point on the x-axis has y-coordinate 0, a point on the y-axis has x-coordinate 0, and the origin is (0, 0).

🔒
Applied Coordinates
Coordinate pairs can stand for real amounts: on a sales chart each day is a point (x items, y items); the highest point has the most of the y quantity, the rightmost the most of the x quantity, and points on the y side of the 'same number' line have more of y than x.

Level Check
Ten questions on Level 1: reading, plotting and choosing points by their coordinates, the axes, shared coordinates, and a pair read as a real amount.
