Chapter IV

On Stagnation, and the Necessity of Use

Iron rusts from disuse; stagnant water loses its purity, and in cold weather becomes frozen. Even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind. The hand that does not draw forgets the line. The eye that does not look forgets the shape of things.

I have spent many hours by the rivers of Tuscany, watching how the water moves around a stone set into its bed. It does not strike the stone and fall back defeated; it turns, it parts, it learns the shape and continues.

"He who possesses most must be most afraid of loss."

Just as eating contrary to the inclination is injurious to the health, so study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in. The acquisition of any knowledge whatever is always useful to the intellect, because it will be able to banish the useless things and retain those which are good.

For nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first known. Therefore, let the eye learn before the heart, and the hand before the eye. In the mountains above Florence I have seen the bones of fishes laid into the rock — proof that what was once below the sea now stands above the clouds. The earth itself is restless. It cannot afford stagnation, and neither can we.

The aerodynamic principle

Listen. Think of the bird not as a creature but as a machine made of feathers, bone, and intent. The wing presses down on the air; the air presses up on the wing. This is the whole secret — it is reciprocity, not magic.

Lift is not a gift the air offers; it is the consequence of a wing's geometry pressed against moving air. I learned this not from books but from watching kites and falcons over Vinci. The wing is angled so that air beneath it is slowed and compressed, while air above it is forced to travel farther and faster. The difference in pressure pulls the wing upward.

This principle does not require flapping. A held wing — even one not attached to a living body — can sustain itself in moving air, if the geometry is correct. Flapping is for propulsion and for the initial lift. Once aloft, the bird can glide for miles without striking the air at all.

I have drawn dozens of wings and I have built three. Two failed because I was wrong about the proportions; the third failed because the man inside it could not generate enough force. The principle was correct. The body was the limit.
