▶
Positives and Negatives
Every + tile is worth 1 and every − tile cancels one + tile: a + and a − together are worth 0, so the total is the number of + tiles left after the pairs cancel.

🔒
Negative Numbers
A − tile cancels a + tile, so each − tile is worth −1: n − tiles have the value −n, and −n cancels n. To make a negative value you need that many more − tiles than + tiles.

🔒
Making Integers
Whole numbers and their negatives are the integers. More + tiles than − tiles make a positive integer, more − tiles than + tiles a negative one, and the same number of each makes 0.

🔒
Addition
To add integers with tiles, combine the + tiles and the − tiles of both numbers and see what cancels: whatever is left is the sum.
